Dr. Hovey has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate college courses. Undergraduate courses taught include Abnormal Psychology, Childhood Psychopathology, Introductory Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Stress Management, Research Methods, Community Outreach Practica, and a First-Year Orientation course for Psychology Majors. On the graduate level, he has taught Psychopathology, Clinical Interviewing, Clinical Supervision, Ethics, and Teaching Seminars.
In addition to group classes, Dr. Hovey has provided extensive individual instruction. For example, he has served as chair of 10 dissertation committees, 42 master's theses committees, and 6 undergraduate honor's theses. Overall he has served on over 100 dissertation and theses committees.
While at The University of Toledo, six of Dr. Hovey's graduate students were awarded the prestigious University Fellowship by the University of Toledo's Graduate School and one of his students won the American Psychological Association's (APA) Award for Distinguished Graduate Students in Professional Psychology. Post-graduation, students who Dr. Hovey has mentored have consistently obtained internships, postdoctoral fellowships, APA and NIH fellowships, and faculty positions at quality institutions including the Yale University School of Medicine, the University of San Diego School of Medicine, the University of Rochester Medical Center, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and the Ohio State University Medical Center. |
Dr. Hovey is currently chairing the master's theses of Nadeen Salhadar, Monica Ochoa, and Lorena Houghton. Ms. Salhadar is exploring mediating influences on the relationship between obesity and suicide behavior in Latina youth. Ms. Ochoa is examining the moderating influence that social comparison has on cyberbullying victimization in the prediction of suicide behavior. And Ms.Houghton is examining how cyberbullying through social media influences body image and self-esteem which, in turn, influences suicide behavior in young female adults. Recently, Dr. Hovey chaired the master's these of Daniela Chavez, who examined the bilingual measurement of coping styles in acculturating Latino/a adults; Rebecca Gonzalez, who examined mental health stigma and attitudes towards mental health treatment in Latino men; and Veronica Ramirez, who examined how adherence to traditional cultural values influences the experience of anxiety in young Latina women.
